Dougherty are mourning the loss of a remarkable man whose life was defined by faith, family, service, and craftsmanship. Joseph T. Dougherty passed away peacefully at his home in North Caldwell, New Jersey, on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.

His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations who were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. Joseph was far more than a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he was a pillar of strength whose presence brought stability, encouragement, and joy to countless lives.

Born in Glen Ridge and raised in Montclair, Joseph grew up alongside his siblings Teddy, Robert, Ray, Paul, and Elizabeth. From an early age, he demonstrated the determination and leadership qualities that would define his life. A proud graduate of Immaculate Conception High School’s Class of 1951, he excelled both academically and athletically, earning recognition as a talented quarterback. It was during those formative years that he met Adele, the woman who would become his beloved wife and lifelong companion for more than seven decades.

Joseph’s life was a testament to hard work and perseverance. Whether serving honorably in the United States National Guard, building homes that would shelter generations of families, or dedicating himself to his parish and community organizations, he approached every responsibility with integrity and pride. As a gifted carpenter, his hands shaped not only homes but also lasting memories for countless families throughout West Essex. His craftsmanship reflected the values he lived by—precision, patience, and excellence.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joseph embraced life with enthusiasm. He found joy in skiing, tennis, travel, and community service, while remaining deeply committed to his faith through Notre Dame Parish. His generosity, humility, and willingness to help others left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

As family and friends gather to honor his memory, they celebrate a life exceptionally well lived. Though Joseph T.
