The Spirit Lake community and all who had the privilege of knowing Jack Colwell are mourning the loss of a remarkable man whose life was defined by service, friendship, humility, and an enduring passion for the game of golf. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of family members, friends, former students, fellow golfers, and community members who were touched by his kindness and generosity throughout his life.
Born on March 17, 1926, in Gowrie, Iowa, Jack lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to others. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the USS Stanly during World War II, participating in numerous significant Pacific campaigns. His courage and sacrifice during one of history’s most challenging periods reflected the strength of character that would define the rest of his life.
Following his military service, Jack pursued his education and built a beautiful life with his wife, Delores. Together they raised their children, Jackie and Kelly, while becoming deeply rooted in the Spirit Lake area. Over the years, Jack earned admiration not only as a talented artist but also as a respected golf professional, groundskeeper, and course designer. His influence can still be seen across the region through the golf courses he helped create, including Indian Hills and Okoboji View, leaving a lasting legacy for generations of golfers to enjoy.
Those who knew Jack best remember far more than his accomplishments. They remember a man whose warm smile, gentle spirit, and welcoming personality made everyone feel valued. Friends often spoke of his ability to brighten any room and his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed. One longtime friend described him as a brother and cherished companion of more than three decades, remembering him as a man who “didn’t have a mean bone in his body.”
Jack’s greatest pride was always his family. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. Whether sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply enjoying time together, he created memories that will continue to bring comfort and joy to those who loved him.
Though hearts are heavy with grief, Jack’s legacy remains alive in the lives he touched, the friendships he nurtured, and the example of kindness he set for others. He will be remembered as a devoted veteran, gifted mentor, beloved family man, and loyal friend whose impact will never be forgotten.
May his memory bring peace to those who mourn, and may his life continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest peacefully, Jack. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
